What is Lung Tumor Treatment?

There are important to choose the option treatment, possible side effects and easy to ease the discomfort that may come with treatment. Each patient is different, and his or her course of treatment will be personalized. There are several treatments for lung tumor:

    • Surgery

Surgery is an option for some patients depending on the type and stage of their lung tumor. Surgery can remove the tumor along with the diseased part of the lung. Removing the tumor with surgery is the most common option when the tumor has not spread. There are three types of lung tumor surgery:

Wedge Resection

Wedge resection is the removal of a small, wedge-shaped part of the lung tissue surrounding the lung tumor.

Lobectomy/ Bilobectomy

Lobectomy is the removal (resection) of the lobe (section) of the lung affected by lung tumor. Other than that, bilobectomy is the removal of two

lobes in the same lung. The right lung is divided into three lobes while the left lung has two lobes.

Pneumonectomy

Pneumonectomy is the removal of the entire lung affected by tumor. This procedure is usually done if the tumor cannot be fully removed with the lobectomy, if there is concern that tumor may have spread throughout the left or right lung or if the lesion is centrally located.

    • Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses powerful, high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells or keep them from growing. The aim of radiation therapy is kill the tumor cells only in the area of the lung. Radiation can be used before surgery to shrink the tumor. It may also be used after surgery to kill any tumor cells left in the lungs. Sometimes external radiation is used as the main types of lung tumor treatment.

    • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the special powerful drugs to destroy tumor cells throughout the body. Sometimes several drugs are given at the same time. Sometimes chemotherapy is used to shrink the tumor before treatment and sometimes it is used to kill any tumor cells that are left after the first treatment. Chemotherapy can kill normal cells like blood, skin and nerve cells. When normal cells are dying, it can cause side effects. The side effect includes loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, hair loss, Fatigue, increased risk of infection and increased bleeding or bruising.

    • Targeted therapies

A targeted therapy is a new drug which helps reduce damage to healthy cells. This treatment focus more on tumor cells by interrupting the way tumor cell function and grow. Not every person eligible with this treatment .
